Die Stadt Mainz hatte um 1220 das einfache weiße Kreuz in Schild und Fahne. Das Rad kommt später auf und hinzu. Es stammt aus dem Aschaffenburger Wappen, wohin es wegen eines sprachlichen Anklangs übernommen worden ist. \"Sifried III wird etwa 1234/38 das weiße Rad im roten Feld angenommen haben, um als ein, 'Herr zu Aschaffenburg' seine Machtstellung am Untermain durch ein markantes Hoheitszeichen zu betonen.\"]" ],
