Geboten wird ein umfassendes Verzeichnis aller Residenzstädte des Alten Reichs, die in ausführlichen Artikeln im Stil eines Dictionnaire raisonné vorgestellt werden. Es geht dabei um die Frage, ob und inwieweit Städte durch die Anwesenheit eines fürstlichen bzw. adligen Hofs verändert wurden und ob es Rückwirkungen auf den Hof gegeben hat. Der vierte (Teil-)Band enthält über 200 Artikel, in denen die mal stärkere, mal schwächere höfische Prägung der Städte dargestellt wird.
