    "abstract" : [ "Zwischen römischen Legionen, Wikingern, dem Kaiser und dem Papst – immer wieder war Mainz im Laufe seiner Geschichte Mittelpunkt zahlloser militärischer Auseinandersetzungen. Die 2.000-jährige Geschichte von Mainz ist von zahlreichen kriegerischen Konflikten geprägt. Seien es die römischen Soldaten, die in der spätantiken Stadt stationiert waren, streitbare Erzbischöfe, die für die Durchsetzung ihrer Ansprüche buchstäblich über Leichen gingen, oder gegnerische Mächte, die auf Zerstörung oder Befreiung und manchmal sogar beides aus waren. Seit der Errichtung eines Legionslagers kurz vor Christi Geburt kam es wiederholt zu Auseinandersetzungen mit gallischen und germanischen Stämmen, was im 3. Jh. n. Chr. den Bau einer ersten großen Stadtmauer zur Folge hatte. Nach dem Ende der römischen Herrschaft drohte die Stadt von den Wikingern heimgesucht zu werden, kam jedoch mit dem Schrecken davon. Im Investiturstreit des 11. Jhs. geriet Mainz in den Machtkampf zwischen Kaiser und Papst, wohingegen es im späten Mittelalter zum Spielball konkurrierender Kandidaten für den Erzbischofsthron avancierte – mit fatalen Folgen, als nach der Mainzer Stiftsfehde von 1462 die städtischen Freiheitsrechte verloren gingen. Auch die heraufziehende Neuzeit brachte keine Ruhephase: Im 16. Jh. durch den brandenburgischen Markgrafen Albrecht Alkibiades zum Teil zerstört, entstand im 17. Jh. unter dem Eindruck des Dreißigjährigen Krieges die Zitadelle als großer Festungsbau. Im Jahr 1793 wurde das französisch besetzte Mainz unter heftigen Kämpfen von Preußen und Österreich zurückerobert, was Johann Wolfgang Goethe als Augenzeuge dokumentierte. Im Zweiten Weltkrieg schließlich versank Mainz nach den Bombenangriffen des Jahres 1945 in Schutt und Asche. Experten und Expertinnen aus den Archäologien, den Geschichtswissenschaften, der Germanistik und der Bauforschung sowie Fachleute aus Museum, Archiv und Bibliothek verschaffen einen facettenreichen Eindruck von den kriegerischen Konflikten und werfen Schlaglichter auf zwei Jahrtausende „Kämpfen um Mainz\"." ],
