Schon bald beteiligt sich das Familienunternehmen am Bau des Westwalls und errichtet auf dem Firmengelände ein Lager für Zwangsarbeiter, während das Weingut die Wachmannschaften des KZ Sachsenhausen mit rheinhessischem Wein beliefert: Geschäfte, die nur möglich sind durch enge persönliche Verbindungen und Seilschaften, vor Ort und bis in die NS-Führungsriege. In diesem System werden die fünf Kinder des Patriarchen auf ihre je eigene Art zu Tätern und zu Opfern. Die Autorin ist die Urenkelin des Firmengründers. Sie geht einem wachsenden Unbehagen nach, sucht in den Archiven nach Belegen für das lang Verdrängte - und wird fündig. So erzählt Christina Strunck nicht nur die Geschichte ihrer Familie, sondern auch die Mikrogeschichte einer Gemeinde.
