Das 1904 geschaffene, in seiner Zeit berühmte Werk aus der Sammlung der bedeutenden jüdischen Unternehmerfamilie Freudenberg galt seit der NS-Zeit als verschollen. 1992 wird es zunächst dem Land Rheinland-Pfalz in stillen Verhandlungen zum Kauf angeboten, bevor es stattdessen von der dortigen Landesbank Rheinland-Pfalz (LRP) erworben wird. Hier soll es nach dem Willen der Beteiligten die Sammlung rheinland-pfälzischer Kunst bereichern sowie dem Landesmuseum Mainz mit seinem Slevogt-Archiv als Leihgabe zur Verfügung stehen. Über das wiederentdeckte Gemälde senkt sich stattdessen jedoch ein Mantel des Verdrängens, des Vergessens und des Schweigens. Erst nahezu 30 Jahre später, nachdem die LRP bereits 2008 von der Landesbank Baden-Württemberg (LBBW) übernommen worden ist, erfährt es die verdiente Aufmerksamkeit. Im Zuge der drängenden Fragen zu seiner Provenienz und möglichen Restitutionsansprüchen wird es Gegenstand intensiver Nachforschungen seitens der Sammlung LBBW. Die akribische Spurensuche verfolgt die Werkgeschichte seit seiner Entstehung, beleuchtet die Zeitumstände und das teils tragische Schicksal seiner ursprünglichen Eigentümer in der Vergangenheit. Für sein \"Entdecktes Judenthum\" (1700) arbeitete sich der Heidelberger Theologieprofessor Eisenmenger rund 20 Jahre lang in das rabbinische Schrifttum ein und schuf unter vermeintlich apologetischer Zielsetzung eine intelligent konstruierte Demagogie. In seinem ca. 2000 Seiten umfassenden Werk fügt er aus rund 300 vorrangig jüdischen Werken die für seine Zwecke passenden Zitate zusammen. Dafür stellt Eisenmenger stets dem Original eine Übersetzung gegenüber und nimmt eine vom Original losgelöste Neukontextualisierung vor, um das Judentum zu diffamieren. Das \"Entdeckte Judenthum\" kann damit als Apologie, Rezeption und Polemik gelesen werden. Aus Sorge vor Ausschreitungen wurde das Werk erst 1741, 40 Jahre nach seiner Fertigstellung, nach einem umfangreichen Prozess freigegeben.
