Es wundert nicht, dass er dem Nationalsozialismus von Beginn an mit Ablehnung entgegentrat. Dennoch stieg er bis Ende 1939 zum Generalleutnant auf und kommandierte eine Infanterie-Division am Westwall. Hier erreichte der Konflikt zwischen ihm und den Machthabern des NS-Staates seinen Höhepunkt und er verhinderte, in einer für die Wehrmacht beispiellosen Episode, ein geplantes Pogrom.
