This contemporary historical study is situated in the context of research on coming to terms with the past. It questions this self-image using the example of the monument preservation authorities in Bavaria, Thuringia and the Rhineland. The relationship to the changing German regimes and rulers is a central question: How did the monument authorities act in the central political upheavals of the 20th century?
