    "abstract" : [ "Theodor Groppes Leben begann 1882 im Deutschen Kaiserreich und endete 1973 in der Bonner Bundesrepublik. Ende 1918 erhielt er den Orden Pour le Merité, was den damaligen Hauptmann zu den am höchsten dekorierten preußischen Infanterieoffizieren des Ersten Weltkriegs zählen lässt. Kurz vor dem Waffenstillstand schwer verwundet, entwickelte sich das katholische Bekenntnis seiner Vorfahren in ihm zu einem unerschütterlichen Fundament des Glaubens an Gott. Es wundert nicht, dass er dem Nationalsozialismus von Beginn an mit Ablehnung entgegentrat. Dennoch stieg er bis Ende 1939 zum Generalleutnant auf und kommandierte eine Infanterie-Division am Westwall. Hier erreichte der Konflikt zwischen ihm und den Machthabern des NS-Staates seinen Höhepunkt und er verhinderte, in einer für die Wehrmacht beispiellosen Episode, ein geplantes Pogrom. Das vorliegende Buch zeichnet die Geschichte eines Mannes nach, der Offizier wurde, um König und Vaterland zu schützen und der als General Widerstand leistete, als die Masse seiner Kameraden ihrem Führer treu in den Abgrund folgte." ],
