Ablageräume von heiligen jüdischen Büchern und Textilien (Genisot) wurden in Deutschland mit Schwerpunkt im heutigen Rheinland-Pfalz entdeckt. Diese Funde wurden meist unter den Dächern der Synagogen gemacht, etwa wenn ein Gebäude saniert oder abgerissen wurde. Nur vereinzelt gelang es, die dabei zutage geförderten Reste von Büchern und Handschriften gründlicher zu erforschen und zu dokumentieren. In seinem umfangreichen Werk ist es Andreas Lehnardt nach jahrelanger intensiver Erforschung gelungen, einen Überblick über Inhalt und Bedeutung dieser einzigartigen jüdischen Relikte für die Geschichte des Judentums in Rheinland-Pfalz zu erarbeiten. Erhalten haben sich oft stark beschädigte und verschmutzte hebräische und jiddische Bücher sowie Manuskripte in verschiedenen Sprachen und Synagogentextilien wie Tora-Wimpel oder auch Gebetsmäntel und Kopfbedeckungen. Die Genisa-Funde aus Rheinland-Pfalz lassen dabei ein Profil erkennen, welches sich zwar in vielerlei Hinsicht mit denen in anderen Regionen Deutschlands und im benachbarten Ausland überschneidet, das aber auch Eigenheiten erkennen lässt. Diese werden erstmals übergreifend verglichen. Der mit einer Einleitung in die Thematik \"Genisa\" versehene Band wird durch einen reich bebilderten Katalogteil, ein Literaturverzeichnis und ein Register der Funde ergänzt.
