Die Burg Trifels - um 1081 erbaut, dem Kaiser überschrieben, an die Kurpfalz verpfändet und in Flammen aufgegangen - hat eine ebenso ereignisreiche wie eindrucksvolle Geschichte. Doch geriet sie bis ins 19. Jahrhundert in Vergessenheit und verwahrloste. Erst 1841 stieg das Interesse wieder und die Ruine wurde neu instand gesetzt. Im Jahr 2023 war die Burg Trifels Ort eines internationalen Expertenaustausches zu den Burgen am Oberrhein. Der Oberrhein zwischen Basel und Bingen weist eine hohe Dichte an mittelalterlichen Burgen auf; mehr als 1000 Burgen prägen das Landschaftsbild dort, wo sich die deutsche, schweizerische und französische Grenze treffen. Diese im Wesentlichen in der Zeit vom 11. bis 15. Jahrhundert errichteten Burgen bilden ein gemeinsames kulturelles Erbe. Welche Akteure und Ereignisse das Zeitgeschehen bestimmten, welche geographischen Voraussetzungen galten, und ob die Burgen am Oberrhein mehr Gemeinsamkeiten als Unterschiede hinsichtlich ihrer geographischen, topographischen, strategischen, bau- und herrschaftspolitischen Voraussetzungen und Entwicklungen in ihrer Geschichte aufweisen, diesen Fragen gehen Expertinnen und Experten der Archäologie, Geschichte und Kunstgeschichte für die Zeit von der Spätantike bis zum Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts nach. Sie präsentieren die Burgen mit ihrer Vor- und Nachgeschichte auf der Grundlage neuester Forschungsergebnisse. Das Buch ist Teil des umfangreichen, Interreg-geförderten Projekts „Burgen am Oberrhein.
