Das 1904 geschaffene, in seiner Zeit berühmte Werk aus der Sammlung der bedeutenden jüdischen Unternehmerfamilie Freudenberg galt seit der NS-Zeit als verschollen. 1992 wird es zunächst dem Land Rheinland-Pfalz in stillen Verhandlungen zum Kauf angeboten, bevor es stattdessen von der dortigen Landesbank Rheinland-Pfalz (LRP) erworben wird. Hier soll es nach dem Willen der Beteiligten die Sammlung rheinland-pfälzischer Kunst bereichern sowie dem Landesmuseum Mainz mit seinem Slevogt-Archiv als Leihgabe zur Verfügung stehen. Über das wiederentdeckte Gemälde senkt sich stattdessen jedoch ein Mantel des Verdrängens, des Vergessens und des Schweigens. Erst nahezu 30 Jahre später, nachdem die LRP bereits 2008 von der Landesbank Baden-Württemberg (LBBW) übernommen worden ist, erfährt es die verdiente Aufmerksamkeit. Im Zuge der drängenden Fragen zu seiner Provenienz und möglichen Restitutionsansprüchen wird es Gegenstand intensiver Nachforschungen seitens der Sammlung LBBW. Die akribische Spurensuche verfolgt die Werkgeschichte seit seiner Entstehung, beleuchtet die Zeitumstände und das teils tragische Schicksal seiner ursprünglichen Eigentümer in der Vergangenheit.
